On May 11, 1894, three thousand Pullman workers went on strike after voting on it the night before. The strikers were part of the American Railroad Union (ARU) founded by Eugene Debs. The ARU demanded that arbitrators be called forth to come up with a compromise and settle their issues.

Two major labor strikes were the Homestead Strike and the Pullman Strike. The Pullman Strike was a nationwide railroad strike in the United States that lasted from May 11 to July 20, 1894, and a turning point for US labor law.
